Néphrotoxicité des médicaments vétérinaires: étude rétrospective des cas de pharmacovigilance déclarés chez le chien et le chat

Abstract : Reports of renal disease following drug administration and for which a potential link was found, were analysed from cases registered by the National Agency for Veterinary Medicinal Products (ANMV) in a six-year retrospective study. In dogs the main drugs involved were certain nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), torasemide and fluralaner. In cats, the most common drugs implicated were telmisartan, benazepril, meloxicam, masitinib, ciclosporin, fluralaner and the levamisole/niclosamide combination. Older animals as well as large dog breeds or, conversely, small pet dogs, appeared to be more affected. The results obtained should be put into perspective or even confirmed because of the subjective nature of the reports. This study demonstrates that it is necessary to have good knowledge of the potential nephrotoxicity of veterinary drugs and to provide prior assessment of renal function before therapy to prevent serious adverse effects.
