Le lien père-enfant au parloir : entre pertes et ressources

Abstract : This article examines the experience of fatherhood in prison via a specific place: the visiting room. This place of exchange allows us to catch the emotions, discourses on the practices and values of the men in detention. Our study is based on 160 interviews conducted with 70 prisoners in a remand prison and a detention centre. Introducing only those prisoners who meet their children in the visiting room will show how this system does not determine a single way of qualifying and defining oneself as a father in prison, but reveals two main trends: on the one hand, the difficulties of feeling like a father and appropriating parental roles in the visiting room, and on the other hand, the importance of this place for (re)affirming one’s paternity.
